Janet Y'lania began her studies in piano at the age of five. In high school, she composed music for the school's drama department for the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as numerous pieces for the school band, one of which was aired on local radio.
Her piano compositions began in earnest at this time as her love of poetry, philosophy, jazz and choral music began to blend together to create a unique genre of music. However, in 1986, this new style wasn't appreciated yet in university as a music composition major. The old professors wanted to hear the sounds of Mozart, Handel and big-band jazz. They weren't ready for anything new. Undeterred, Y'lania kept composing for piano, choir and ensembles as melodies danced through her head. Today, she has a composed over 100 pieces of music, one of which came to her during an afternoon siesta. Upon awakening, she got up and wrote it down. She will be performing a selection of her original compositions.
