There are many reasons why people decide to give.
Social conscience: many of us in feel a moral duty to help others and support causes we believe in.
Personal values: giving aligns with personal values and principles.
Impact on the community: donations can have a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and communities.
As followers of Jesus it's all of the above, and more.
Many of us believe that when we give to others, we share in the abundance that God is sharing with us. In the United Church of Canada, we refuse to believe in "scarcity-thinking", that there just isn't enough for all of us, so ya gotta look out for number one first. Instead, we believe that there is more than enough for everyone; but this abundance will only become available when we share it. We believe this is one of Christ's core teachings.
And so we donate...
to food programs and the food-insecure,
to community programs and those experiencing homelessness,
to causes like climate justice, anti-racism, homophobia, reconciliation with Canada's Indigenous Peoples.
We give to help make this world look a little bit more like God envisioned it from the start.
We give, because we're all better of, when we're all better of.
